It is impossible to describe how hard Jack has been studying for his "boards" (officially known as USMLE step 1 = United States Medical Licensing Exam). The score that students get on this test greatly affects what residency programs they will be able to get into, so you could say that it is the most important test that a medical student will ever take. Jack and many of his classmates have devoted months to studying for this test. To give you an idea, for the past several months Jack's schedule has normally been something like this:
Wake up at 5:00 am and head up to school to study. Study ALL day. Sometimes come home for dinner. Go back to studying until 11:00 or midnight. Wake up and repeat every day except Sunday.
Sometimes I have woken up in the wee hours of the morning to feed Jackson and have found Jack laying in bed listening to a Golijan lecture on his ipod. Other nights I have woken up to find that he isn't home at all.
Needless to say, he has had to miss out on a lot and it hasn't been easy for any of us. I am proud of him for his dedication. We have missed him so much, but I also know he has done this for the good of our family.
This test has consumed our lives for long enough and so today I am happy to say IT'S OVER!
The kids and I can't wait to spend the next week basking in Jack's undivided attention before his rotations start!
